This is my guitar teacher, Tom Kopyto. He recently joined a Shredder Search contest at the Dean Guitars website. His surpases 90% of the others in skill and pure attitude. Therefor I have posted this video (not only to show how much of a kickass guitar teacher I have) but to get him the votes he so rightfully deserves. He has been in Guitar Player's Magazine TWICE for various awards, and is an amazing guy and teacher. You can vote him an 11 at http://www.deanguitars.com/shredder/viewProfile.php?id=875 if you like it. So watch the video, be amazed by his skill, and if you want, go vote him a high score at the Dean Guitars contest. Pop over and watch some other entries too, they're all good (but not quite as good as Tom's). Anyway...wadya think? Crazy enough for a shredding contest?

He made it himself...I should've put that. He writes a ton of songs, and that was the point of the contest, just to write a shredding lick. He has a ton of instructional vids for things like that on Youtube...but I forget his account name...

Too bad its shredding. Mindless speed over actual composition.
He's got the chops. But musically, its a mess. |

Well it wasn't supposed to be musical...it's a shredding contest you know...
He has songs on his myspace that are like "O.O". It's better than all the other two-hand tapping solos on there...

Shredding is mindless. That's the point.
I listen to metal and love it, and have done for many years. But I still think that standard shredding is just a bit dull. For example, Slayer solos are out of key mindless gibberish. Hanneman reached 22notes per second in Decade of Agression, which is quite the shredding speed. But it still sounds silly. Its FUN but its not GOOD. GOBxxxBLUTH although I am not a fan of Dream Theater (its the vocals I just don't like - shame because so many people love them that I want to as well) I did listen to that solo on YouTube. Its good. Yes. But its not really shredding, shreddy in parts, but otherwise structured. I still think you can go obscenely quickly without shredding up and down scales and sound STRUCTURED and good. I don't know, I'm not trying to deny your teacher his unquestionable skills - but I can't appreciate shredding no matter how good. Just my opinion. To me, having a "shredding" context is like having a vomiting contest. To meet the winner wouldn't be so amazing. Also, just for the record, the best solo I have ever heard is on Necrophagist's "Fermented Offal Discharge". Yes, its Neo-Classical TechDeath and yes it IS called "Fermented Offal Discharge" but when you get past those things and listen to the solo, it just doesn't matter. Amazing skill and composition. Mohammed Suicmez is a God. |

That's what I wanted to hear. ^_^
Yes, it is a shame it's a shredding contest and not a song-making contest, but it's Dean guitars...what can you expect? Metally company=shredding contests... I'm gonna listen to that solo too. EDIT: Listened to Necrophagist's solo, it was cool. I like the One by Metallica solo. Not particularly the tapping part but everything else.

Haha. Your right, Arthur. Slayler solos are the pinnacle of mindless note vomiting

What's all this "structured" crap. If it sounds goods then that's all too it. What do you even mean by structured? Neater? Possibly more notes. If it sounds good it sounds good. Let me give you an analogy of how I think this work with magic. I would be a layperson watching a really good ACR. Now, the magician could do all the passes he knows and it would be amazing. He could also do a series of double and tilt's and what not. They're still the same to the spectactor and it applies here. It doesn't matter how you do it as long as you do it well ( playing guitar ) so I don't see why you need any "structure" in guitar playing.

Amp brings up a good point.
Things like Slayer are mindless shredding...there's nothing really...but even when a solo is shredding, as long as its in the right key and arpeggiated and SOUNDS good then screw musicality...long, fast guitar solos aren't musical in the first place. I also believe the best solo ever is Freebird...

Technicality in music does not MAKE good music. Steve Vai can play 30 notes per second, but I'd rather listen to him play 2. Structured would be the term I use to.. well.. describe the structure of the piece. The form. When the fast bits are used, when it slows down. When off key notes are used. When a lick is repeated. All these things are part of structure and all these things matter a great deal. My problem is, with shredding, all these things seem to go out the window. Its just a case of play-as-fast-as-you-can, something I don't want to listen to. Consider a song with a long solo, of about 2 minutes. If they played fast for 2 minutes, and stayed on the same set of 10 notes, and repeated a lick every 10 notes you would have a boring piece of music which would even irritate. Now consider it is more structured and thought about, and some passages are replaced with slow licks, some strange off-key notes are put in for effect and accentuation, and choice licks are repeated in places to give a cyclic quality to some passages which fits the song because blah blah blah. Then you have a piece of music you can get your teeth into. I don't know. Perhaps you like rap music and therefore enjoy constant beats and licks during a song. Perhaps our needs differ in music. Perhaps the fact that I like progressive music swings my view. I shall not call you "wrong" if you respect my opinion. I respect yours. But that does not mean I cannot ardently disagree with it. EDIT: I like freebird too CP, good solo. As are many others. I'm glad you gave TechDeath a chance ![]() Last edited by Arthur Pitt; 3 Weeks Ago at 03:46 PM. |

People are different, you may want to hear Steve play 2 notes per second, other may want to hear more. I'll just take ,"structure" on as the form of the song, i.e, chorus, verses, solos, etc. Well, shredding is playing very fast. it doesn't need to be structured becasue it's not a song. I can see why solos with only 10 notes can get boring because they're only ten notes but I have yet to discover which does that. I don't like rap and I only have two songs from fort minor. I like older rock ( Zeppelin, Floyd, Bob dylan,), Classical, Jazz, and probably lots more.
